Goldfish Crusade

The goldfish bowl teetered in Rio's arms as he stood, sobbing over the toilet.

"Okay ...it's time to say good-bye." I nudged.

"But I love him!" Rio cried.

"Honey, he's been dead for a week," I explained. "It's time to let him go."

Reluctantly, Rio tilted his fish bowl over the toilet.

"Wait!" My husband snatched the bowl from him and held it up. We stared with disbelief.

"He's alive!" Rio's prayers were answered.

"Tell me that didn't happen," I mumbled. "I haven't fed his fish in two months..."

"Why won't this fish die?" My husband chuckled.

Still haven't done this one yet, but now I'm going to have to get with it.

  2. Haha. I loved the 'been dead for a week' part. I once had a roommate who was fish sitting for a friend and the fish died. She was convinced that the friend would want to say goodbye herself so she put the whole bowl in the freezer until the friend came back into town.

  5. So funny! I'm really in tune with this - we had wondered if the fish in our pond had finally succumbed after the snow this Winter (they stay at the bottom for yonks) but up they've come...
    great story!

  8. Aww! I'm glad the fish isn't dead, but without food, it makes me wonder what else is special about this little goldfish.

  10. I'm chuckling and saying ew at the same time. LOL!

The ew is for the fish being dead a week and still in the fishbowl, because our fish died when my husband was away on business and I didn't want to have to tell my son (I think he was 3 at the time) by myself. So I waited for my husband to return. That fish got really gross.

And of course I'm chuckling at the cute story.

  11. We had a fish like that. It floated on top of the water. Oh no, it's dead. Then it flipped over and swam to the bottom. No, it's not. I found out later that they can get a disease or condition where their stomach fills up with gas and it causes them to float belly-up. Good luck with that.

  16. Get a louder pet. They'll remind you to feed them.

  17. Fish can be hard to kill. :) I had two goldfish (Harry and Ron -- during my Harry Potter phase) that survived almost everything -- cold apartment, hot apartment, forgotten feedings, not enough cleanings, etc. I think Ron kicked it first because I ended up getting Ron Jr. to keep Harry company,

  18. Good twist. We had a fish like this as well. After it started hopping out and flopping on the floor, I started leaving it longer and longer. The darn thing made it a whole night once. Magic or something.

  19. Great job! Love the twist. :) I'm a follower.

  24. LOL! I had images of a stinking fish that had been dead a week. This is reminiscent of childhood nightmares of forgetting to feed animals. I didn't forget but I used to dream about it :O)

  37. I stopped buying gold fish cause they always died on me!

I joined the A to Z Challenge and saw your blog listed so I just stopped in to say "Hi". I look forward to reading your alphabet posts in April.

  38. Love this! I had a fish that I gave up on two or three times, but he always came back. And then there was the mean bird that would never die. It is amazing how long they stick around sometimes!
